TOKYO — Akira Toriyama, one of the most influential and best-selling manga authors of all time, has passed away, his studio said Friday.
He was 68.
Toriyama died on March 1 from a blood clot in his brain, according to his production company Bird Studio’s statement on Friday. The funeral service took place with only his family and a few relatives in attendance, it was stated.
The Japanese author is mostly famous as being the creator of the popular Dragon Ball manga series, which has fans all over the world and has given rise to a well-known anime series, video games, and films.
Debuting the manga series back in 1984, it portrayed the tale of a boy named Son Goku, who embarks on a journey to collect magical dragon balls to save Earth from alien humanoids named Saiyans.
The anime adaptation came in 1989 and quickly gained international recognition, becoming one of the most recognized pieces of Japanese media globally. According to his studio, it has sold a total of 260 million copies.
Toriyama had worked for 45 years and left behind some unfinished work at the time of his passing.”

On Friday, many people in Japan and around the world paid their respects to Toriyama.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a press conference that the government was “deeply saddened by the news of his death” and expressed his condolences to the late author’s family. Toriyama said, “It was an opportunity for Japanese content to be widely recognized around the world, and it led to an increase in inbound tourists.” “I believe that Mr.Toriyama’s work very important role in demonstrating Japan’s soft power.role”
Famous Japanese actors Yuki Kaji and Toshio Furukawa also expressed their gratitude in posts to X.
Toriyama’s death also sparked widespread praise on neighboring China’s social media platform Weibo, with 40 million views and thousands of discussions on the subject.
“We would like to express our deep condolences for the death of Mr. Akira Toriyama and his family,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Toriyama-sensei is a famous manga artist, and his works were well-received in China. “We hope and believe that Japan will have more experts who will actively promote China-Japan cultural exchanges and friendship between the two countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.
